A NEW campaign celebrates the work of a engineering pioneer.

Sir George Cayley is he latest historical figure to feature in the Great North Yorkshire Sons and Daughters campaign, a series which highlights the work of important, and yet often widely unknown people from the county.

The series draws on preserved artefacts from the county council’s archives and is being run in partnership with local history groups.

Born in Scarborough in 1773, Sir Cayley is one of the most innovative and influential characters from North Yorkshire. Often regarded as 'The Father of Flight', Cayley created the first glider to carry a human being, and published a paper which outlined the principles of aerodynamics, which is now considered in aviation as the original document on how to fly.

In 1853, at the age of 79, Sir Cayley changed history when the world’s first man carrying glider successfully flew across Brompton Dale.
