AROUND 55m people in the UK own a mobile phone according to latest figures, but the number of mobile phone thefts have rocketed in the last few years.

Mobile phone recycling firm Mazuma Mobile contacted police forces from around the UK in order to find out where in the country suffered with the highest number of phone thefts.

It found that one city in the North-East was Britain's second-highest place when it came to the number of stolen phones, with 5,002 reported in the past three years.

Here's the top five places with the highest number of mobile phone thefts:

  • Leeds - 6,078
  • Newcastle upon Tyne - 5,002
  • Liverpool - 4,005
  • Bristol - 3,578
  • Kingston upon Hull - 3,559
  • Brighton and Hove - 2,694

The lowest number of mobile phone thefts:

  • Bournemouth - 490
  • Derby - 535
  • Nottingham - 1,132
  • Bradford - 1,559
  • Plymouth - 1,912
  • Leicester - 1,248

Out of Newcastle's mobile phone thefts, figures revealed Apple iPhone's were most popular with 2,387 stolen in the last three years.
