POLICE arrested a man and dealt with 'sporadic incidents' of disorder following last night's game between Middlesbrough and Leeds.

The match, which is viewed by many as a local derby, is often accompanied by fan trouble and Cleveland Police drafted in extra support from the mounted sections of Northumbria and West Yorkshire Police and British Transport Police to ward off potential trouble.

The game, played at the Riverside Stadium, finished with Middlesbrough losing one nil and police thanked the 'overwhelming majority' of fans who behaved themselves.

Speaking after the game, Match Commander, Superintendent Sharon Cooney, said: "I would like to thank the overwhelming majority of law-abiding people who attended the game tonight, watched the match and supported their team.

"Inevitably, there were a minority of people intent on causing disorder and officers looked to deal with those sporadic incidents promptly, effectively and in the safest possible manner."

"Tactics including holding back the Leeds United supporters were utilised to minimise any incidents of disorder.

"Public safety has remained our primary aim during the planning stages of this game and throughout tonight's match.

"One 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicioun of assaulting a police officer and he remains in police custody at this time.

"Again, I would like to thank the law-abiding majority who attended the game and supporters for their patience during the hold back."
