A NATIONAL recruitment campaign to get more people into teaching is coming to Teesside today.

The drive is aimed at giving people information about routes into teaching as part of efforts by the Department of Education to find new recruits for the profession.

The Train to Teach event at Jurys Inn Middlesbrough, in Fry Street, is on from 4.30pm to 7.30pm and is being supported by local teachers who will be on hand to share their experiences of the variety and fulfilment they get from working in modern schools today.

Samantha Burlison, a design and technology teacher at St Michael's Catholic Academy, Billingham, said: “I’m supporting the campaign because I would like to encourage more people in Middlesbrough to consider a career in teaching.

“One of the best parts of teaching for me is knowing that the moment a student steps inside your classroom, you have the responsibility to ensure that they are welcomed into a calm and positive environment.

“I enjoy creating an environment in which you can help engage them in new learning and discovery that will help them in later life.

“I love the moment you ignite that spark in a young person's imagination, knowing that for them, the possibilities are endless into what they can go on to achieve.”

Roger Pope, spokesperson for the Get Into Teaching campaign and a National Leader of Education, said: “It’s a wonderful feeling knowing every lesson shapes a life.

“As well as the immense satisfaction of witnessing students learn and knowing you are influencing the next generation, teaching enables you to tap into your talents and passion for your subject.

“It also offers some very competitive financial rewards and long-term prospects.

“Anyone who feels they have the passion and potential to teach should come along to this event in Middlesbrough.”

Last year, the Government launched its Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy to deal with rising pupil numbers and an increasing number of people leaving the profession.

By 2025 there will be 15 per cent more pupils in secondary schools than there were in 2018.

Today's event will feature experienced teacher training advisors, information about training options, next steps, financial support and career progression.

Prospective teachers could receive a £26,000 tax-free bursary to train as a teacher and newly-qualified teachers start on a minimum starting salary of £24,000 to £30,000, depending on location.

Applications for teacher training, starting in September, are open.
