A MOTORIST had a lucky escape from her overturned car thanks to the police and a mobile phone location app.

The woman was driving along the A19 when her car came off the road at Thirsk and ended up on its roof.

Due to the precarious position of her upturned car she was unable to get out and had no real idea where she was.

It happened at around 8pm on Friday night and no passing motorists saw or reported the crash.

Luckily the woman managed to ring her dad in Shrewsbury who talked her through the What Three Words App which can specifically pinpoint a mobile phone's location.

He then rang the York control room for help. A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police Roads Policing Group said: "We kept a three way conversation with daughter, dad and control for the four minutes it took officers to get on scene. Driver released and luckily OK. We can not stress the importance and benefits of this location tool."
