Heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours has led to the Environment Agency closing Yarm's floodgates - while train services have also been disrupted.

First Trans Pennine Express said: "Due to a speed restriction because of high winds between York and Darlington trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.

"Train services through these stations may be subject to disruption on all routes. Disruption is expected until 3.45pm today."

The Environment Agency said: "Overnight we have seen heavy rainfall in the River Tees area.

"This has meant that the River Tees is now rising.

"Levels suggest that there will be flooding to low lying land and roads close to the river today (Saturday, February 22).

"River levels are expected to peak late this afternoon. Phase one and phase two flood gates at Yarm will be closed, and remain closed until tomorrow morning at the earliest.

"Car parks, footpaths and private gardens accessed via the riverside will be inaccessible throughout this time.

"We are monitoring the situation closely and will issue further messages if the situation changes.

"Take care near the areas of concern and avoid walking or driving along riverside roads and footpaths.

"We are monitoring river levels closely and our operational teams are out on the ground checking and clearing any blockages from rivers."

The agency said it would update its information either later today or by tomorrow morning.
