The alleged incident, which took place at the junction of Shaftesbury Street and Yarm Lane in Stockton, led to a police cordon being erected in the street for much of Friday morning.
At the time, a witness told The Northern Echo that she woke up to what looked like a crime scene at the end of the street.
In an update this afternoon, police confirmed that a man, 32, had sustained serious head injuries and had to be taken to hospital.
