A TEENAGER has appeared at court following the robbery of a village shop on Tuesday.

Kyle Zelinka appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court this afternoon where he faced one count of robbery and one of theft.

The incident is alleged to have taken place at Easington Village News store on Tuesday, February 18.

Zelinka, of Station Road, Shotton Colliery, entered no pleas and was remanded into police custody pending a hearing at Durham Crown Court on March 19.

Seaham and Easington Neighbourhood Policing Team have taken to social media to reassure residents following the incident.

They said in a statement: "Seaham and Easington NPT would like to reassure local residents that a male is currently in police custody following an incident at the Village News Store, Easington Village yesterday evening (Tuesday, February 18) and that no other person is wanted in connection to this incident.

"We would also like to dispel any concerns that the person responsible for this incident was a resident from the Kings Mews residential area. Thank you."
