Cameras enforcing new rules limiting residents to 52 trips to the tip each year have been switched on today.

The automatic number plate recognition cameras will be used to log vehicle registration numbers.

Here's everything you need to know:

Residents can dispose of household waste by visiting recycling centres in Raikes Lane, Bolton, or Salford Road, Over Hulton.

But new rules mean people will be limited to 52 trips to the tip each year.

The new rules came into effect on February 10 but cameras have only been switched on today.

Vehicles that pass the threshold will be stopped by staff who will check if the waste is trade material.

The laws are designed to crack down on builders and tradesmen - who are supposed to pay for a waste licence - from using tips for free like members of the public.

According to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, illegal use of tips costs the region £5 million per year.

Residents will be offered help and support to manage their waste going forward.

They can also request a waste audit for advice to manage their waste and to support them to recycle correctly.

If people are still struggling while recycling everything possible, they may be entitled to a bigger grey bin after their waste audit.

This will include a £28 charge to cover administration and delivery costs, if a grey bin is authorised.

In some cases, those really struggling may be offered a “fresh start” with their recycling bins, if there is a commitment to recycle correctly in the future.

The Executive Cabinet Member for Environmental Services Delivery, Cllr Adele Warren, said: “The limit for a standard car had been set at a level which should mean that residents disposing of household waste should really not be impacted by the changes.

“ou may visit the tips multiple times in any given week providing you do not exceed 52 visits in a year.

“The restrictions are being introduced to stop trader abuse and most areas across the UK have similar rules in place.”

The regulations restrict people with cars and cars with single axle trailers to 52 visits per year. Cars with double axle trailers and vans up to 3.5 tonne gross vehicle weight can use the tips 18 times.

Vans above 3.5 tonne gross weight are limited to 12 trips per year.

Traders will be offered advice and directed to a commercial waster disposal site if found to be trying to use a household waste recycling centre.
