ONLINE retailer Amazon is still recruiting to fill a number of roles as it prepares to turn on its first distribution centre in the North-East.

The international retailer, which promises to deliver most of its items within two hours in areas served by 'fulfillment centres', is set to open the region's first in Darlington later this year.

Among the jobs the retailer is asking people to apply for, a maintenance technician, IT support specialist and automation engineer are still areas the retailer is hoping to fill.

Before New Year, Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said Amazon had guaranteed that none of its employees in Darlington would be paid less than £9.50 an hour, or placed on zero-hour contracts.

At the time he told The Northern Echo: "But the big difference with the announcement today is that Amazon are now coming in and people can go on the website today – they can apply for jobs to start in the coming weeks.

“Amazon have guaranteed the lesser qualified jobs are going to be a minimum payment of £9.50 an hour so not minimum wage and not zero-hour contracts."
