A Teesside entrepreneur has reached out to support a promising golfer as he looks to make the next major steps in his fledging career.

Boldon-born Rhys Thompson has received some welcome financial support for the 2020 season from Wynyard Hall CEO Paul Mackings that will allow Thompson to follow his sporting dreams.

Rhys has been a Boldon Golf Club member for 15 years and has competed at national level playing for England and has been the Durham county strokeplay champion.

He said: “I can’t thank Paul enough – he is chairman of Boldon Golf Club and is a very inspiring figure. Paul is forever challenging the youngsters in the club and sets high standards which he likes us all to keep. His record as a respected businessman across the country speaks volumes.

“I can’t thank him enough for reaching out to support me.’’

Rhys will be on the PGA Europro Tour, with the plan to progress to the Challenge Tour in 2021.

He will also be playing satellite tour events, which include 2020 Pro Tour and 1836 Tour which are spread across the year in the North of England.

Mr Mackings said: “I am a big believer in inspiring the youngsters and Rhys is very talented and with a fabulous work ethic.

“Nothing makes me happier than seeing young people wanting to better themselves and enjoying life – Rhys ticks those boxes. I keep telling him to stay focused, believe, work hard and with the right attitude anything is possible.

“I wish him well and I will be pushing and encouraging him all of the way to achieve his goals. I want him to make the North East proud and show people on his extensive travels that this really is a special area.’’
