A MAN in his 20s has suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car on a stretch of the A690 near Durham City.
The incident, which happened in the early hours of this morning, involved a Vauxhall Antara on the A690 Eastbound.
The emergency services were at the scene of the collision, which happened between the Gilesgate roundabout and Belmont junction at around 2.25am.
Police said a 21-year-old pedestrian suffered serious head and leg injuries and had to be taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.
The driver of the Vauxhall Antara, a 40-year-old man, remained uninjured in the incident.
The road remained closed for several hours while police attended to the incident, but reopened at around 8.30am.
A spokesperson for Durham Police urged those who may have witnessed the incident to contact them on 101 and quote incident number 16.
Enquiries are currently ongoing.
