THE man in the middle during of one of football’s most infamous flashpoints will recall the incident, tomorrow.
Alan Wilkie, from Chester-le-Street, began refereeing at the age 26, hanging up his whistle 23 years later, most notably sending off Eric Cantona, leading to the Manchester United player aiming a kung fu-style kick at a Crystal Palace fan during a Premier League match at Selhurst Park, in 1995.
Mr Wilkie will be guest of honour and speaker, telling tales of that match and more, at the first monthly Gents’ Breakfast of the year, in Café Cenno, in Durham Market Hall, at 9.30am tomorrow.
Organised by Age UK County Durham, Durham Markets and Café Cenno, it is open any gent aged 50 and above.
Staged on the third Wednesday each month, it offers men of mature years the chance to eat together and enjoy great company and ‘craic’.
Places are limited and can be reserved by email to cet@ageukcountydurham.org.uk or by ringing 0191-374 6577.
