A MAN who was found dead on Whitby beach earlier this month has been formally named by police.

The body of 64-year-old, Christopher Batty was found near to the town's East Pier on Saturday, January 11.

Mr Batty, from Whitby, had been wearing dark blue trousers and a khaki coloured lightweight jacket at the time of his death.

Launching an appeal for those who knew Mr Batty, on Monday police urged anyone who may have seen him between Tuesday, January 7 and Saturday, January 11, to get in touch with the force.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "Anyone who can assist is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101.

"Select option 1 and pass the information over to the Force Control Room – please quote reference 12200005826 - information can be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 08005-55111."

Mr Batty's death is not being treated as suspicious, however officers are said to be conducting enquiries to determine his last known movements.
