A MAN was beaten by burglars after he was awoken in the early hours of the morning and went downstairs to see what had caused the noise.

The victim was asleep in an upstairs bedroom of a house in Chester-le-Street when he was disturbed early on Thursday morning. He went to investigate and was confronted by about three men and assaulted.

A spokesperson for Durham police said: “A man has been arrested following reports of an aggravated burglary in Chester-le-Street. Officers attended an address in Grampian Drive just after 3.30am after receiving calls of a disturbance. One man was badly injured and was taken to hospital."

Officers have arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of aggravated burglary and he remains in police custody.
