A FORMER president of a Bradford society has died.

The Hindu Cultural Society of Bradford, based in Leeds Road, announced the news that Rajinder Pal Johar died on Tuesday, January 7.

Mr Johar leaves behind his wife and three children - a daughter and two sons.

He was an esteemed member of the Hindu and wider Bradford community, undertaking a number of prominent roles throughout his life.

Mr Johar was a pivotal figure in the building of the first Hindu Temple on Leeds Road and had a long career in teaching - starting in Wibsey First School, before retiring as an Assistant Headmaster in Bradford.

He was also one of the early contributors to Bradford's Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE).

In the 1970s and 80s, Mr Johar was involved in the Community Relations Council and contributed to Punjabi cultural events.

One former colleague described Mr Johar as having an extensive knowledge and appreciation for all faiths and beliefs.

David Jackson of the Interfaith Centre in Bradford said: "When the Bradford Interfaith Education Centre first opened its doors in 1985, Rajinder was already working as an Advisory Teacher for RE with Bradford schools.

"He slipped seamlessly into a new role as the Advisory Teacher for Hindu Dharma and served for many years as part of the interfaith team.

"He was a tireless but ever smiling presence working with teachers and children, of Hindu background but also of all faiths and none, to make sure they had a good grasp not only of the basics of the Hindu way, but of its spirituality - he lived that spirituality and faith to the full.

"They were the source of his enthusiasm, his sheer goodness and his delight in being able to share his deep knowledge and faith with future generations.

"As the first of several Hindu members of the Interfaith team, he laid secure foundations for a Hindu presence in the work of the Centre.

"His memory and legacy lives on. Rest in peace old friend."

The Hindu Cultural Society of Bradford also paid its respects to their former president.

A spokesperson said: "The Hindu Community of Bradford is very sad to hear of the passing of Mr Johar.

"He will be remembered for his selfless service to the Hindu Community of West Yorkshire."

For anyone wishing to pay their respects, there will be a cortege heading to the Shree Lakshmi Narayan Hindu Temple, Leeds Road, on Saturday, January 18, at 8:30am.

Following this, the cortege will proceed to Rawdon Crematorium for 10:30am, before returning to the temple at midday.
