EMERGENCY services have been dealing with two serious incidents after a man was knocked down on a zebra crossing and a car went into a building.

Both incidents were reported to police just before 7am this morning in the South Moor area, near Stanley.

It is understood an elderly man was injured while crossing Park Road.

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: “We were called at about 6.50am to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Park Road, in South Moor, near Stanley.

“A male pedestrian is believed to have been injured but the extent of which are unknown.

“The road was closed for about three hours but has since reopened and the vehicle has been recovered from the scene.”

At around the same time police were called to the area of Salisbury Street and School Terrace after reports a Vauxhall Zafira has gone into a building.

It is understood the two incidents are not currently being linked.

The road is now open and the incident has been cleared.

The incident involving the Vauxhall Zafira colliding with a building has also been cleared, but substantial damage remains.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.11am this morning to reports of a one-vehicle traffic collision on Park Road, Stanley.

"We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance and three crews from our Hazardous Area Reponse Team (Hart). We transported one patient to the University Hospital of North Durham."

The spokesperson added, the accident involved the car which had collided into a building.
