POLICE have confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a man in a flat above a town centre pub, on New Year's Day.
Amid concern for the man's welfare, a call was made to Durham Police, on Wednesday morning.
Shortly after the arrival of emergency services at the premises, above the High Crown pub, in Front Street, Chester-le-Street, the man's death was confirmed.
A short statement issued by a force spokesperson today said: "Police were called to an address on Front Street, Chester-le-Street, shortly after 9.30am yesterday (January 1), following concerns for the welfare of a man.
"Sadly, the man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.
"There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death."
A file relating to the death is being prepared for the Durham Coroner.
