A THIEF is facing Christmas behind bars after trying to get into an unmarked police car.

Two PCSOs were conducting routine enquiries in Consett town centre on Wednesday evening when one spotted a man wearing dark clothing trying the handle of their police vehicle.

The suspect then moved on and tried to get into a second car parked nearby and was promptly arrested.

Damon Clark, 34, from Severn Street, in Chopwell, was sentenced to nine weeks in prison after appearing in magistrates’ court where he pleaded guilty to two counts of vehicle interference and one count of shoplifting.
