AN elderly woman was taken to hospital with a head injury after being hit by a car.

It happened in Durham at about 4.25pm on Tuesday.

The woman, who is in her 80s, was struck by a Ford Focus on Southfield Way, close to the A167 at Sniperley roundabout.

Paramedics and police rushed to the scene to assist and later transported the woman to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) also attended though the woman was taken to hospital by road.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 16.25 yesterday to a road traffic collision on the A691 in Durham involving a pedestrian and a vehicle

“We dispatched a specialist paramedic and a double crewed ambulance and also requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

“An elderly female patient was transported by road to the RVI, with the support of a doctor on board, with a head injury.”

A police spokeswoman said: "Officers were called to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car on the A691 in Durham, yesterday .

"The incident happened on Southfield Way, just before 4.30pm and involved a Ford Focus.

"A woman in her 80s suffered head injuries and was given treatment at the scene.

"She was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle.

"Enquiries are ongoing."
