A TOWN centre was transformed into an illuminated metropolis as the Christmas lights were switched on.

On Saturday night, lights across Redcar were officially switched on for 2019 as crowds gathered to listen to live music and band performances.

The day of activities commenced at 10am with a Christmas version of the Primrose Bell Market on Cleveland Street, Station Road and East Queen Street.

Later that day, those who could not make the evening switch on got the chance to see Santa in his grotto on the High Street.

In the evening, Cleveland's Got Talent winner Rayvn Skye was joined by Undivine Telephone Line in the line-up of independent artists chosen to perform.

Throughout the evening, The Paula Odel Mega Choir performed Christmas Carols while street performers made their way through the High Street.

Attending the annual event, Mayor of Redcar Councillor Billy Wells was pictured with Santa as scores of people watched in anticipation the Christmas light switch on.

On social media, the day was described as "brilliant".
