POLICE are looking for a key witness who helped defend a woman who was being racially abused on a bus in Newcastle.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said it was reported that a woman was subjected to verbal abuse on the x47 bus travelling from Eldon Square to Cowgate at 6.45pm on Monday, September 9.

Officers are now appealing to the public for information and have issued an image of a witness they would like to trace who saw the incident and helped defend the victim.

PC Dave Bowley from Northumbria Police said “This incident has left a woman feeling ostracised and upset after being subjected to racial abuse.

"We take these incidents very seriously and are determined to make sure this kind of behaviour is dealt with.

There is no place for racism in our city and we won’t tolerate it.”

The man, or anyone who knows him should contact Northumbria Police on 101 quoting log 261 090919 or report anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
