A MAN has been taken to a mental health hospital after gaining unauthorised access to a council-owned building.

Police were called to County Hall, in Durham, today following concerns for the welfare of a member of the public.

The man had gained unauthorised access to part of the building, which is the headquarters of Durham County Council, at about 9.40am.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police said: “We were called at 9.40am to County Hall, in Durham, following concerns for the welfare of a member of the public who had entered the building.

“Officers attended and took the man to a secure mental health hospital for treatment.”

David Dixon, Durham County Council’s facilities manager, said: “We can confirm that the police were called to County Hall this morning after a member of the public gained unauthorised access to the building.

“It would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”

In 2018, the council spent £49,000 on new security doors at County Hall to improve safety, after a spate of cases of staff members being threatened and intimidated.
