A MAN has died whilst taking part in a parkrun in Middlesbrough.

He took ill whilst taking part in the popular 5k run at Stewart Park in Marton on Saturday morning.

Four ambulances were called to the scene just before 10am but sadly the man was confirmed dead shortly afterwards.

A Cleveland Police spokesman said: “At 9.45am this morning (Saturday) police were notified by ambulance service colleagues that a man who had taken ill in Stewart Park in Middlesbrough.

“Officers attended but sadly the man was declared dead shortly afterwards.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and our thoughts and sympathy are with his family and friends at this very difficult time."

The organisers of the event posted on the Stewart Parkrun facebook page after previously confirming there had been 'a medical emergency' at the park.

They said: "Following our earlier post, it is with great sadness that I am able to confirm that the runner involved in the medical emergency this morning has died.

"We are unable to identify the runner at this time but can provide assurances that his family are aware.

"Once again I would like to thank all involved in assisting this morning. Parkrun do have support services in place and if anyone feels like they would benefit from these please do not hesitate to get in touch.

"Our thoughts are with everyone touched by this incident."

The Tess Barrage Parkrun organisers shared their condolences, posting on their facebook page: “We are saddened to hear of the passing of a parkrunner at Stewart parkrun this morning.

“Condolences to their family and friends at this sad time.”

The Parkrun is a popular running event with thousands taking part in timed 5k runs at locations across the country every Saturday morning.
