THE Labour Party has said it takes all complaints of sexual harassment extremely seriously after The Northern Echo learned that former Hartlepool MP Mike Hill is still under investigation over sexual harassment claims.
Despite the ongoing investigation, by police as well as Parliamentary standards, Mr Hill, who has rejected the allegations, had the Labour whip restored by the party and has also been re-selected as candidate for Hartlepool.
He released a statement at the end of last month saying he had been reinstated, after Labour said the allegation had been withdrawn.
Yesterday, a Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Labour Party takes all complaints of sexual harassment extremely seriously, which are fully investigated and any appropriate disciplinary action taken in line with the party’s rules and procedures. We cannot comment on individual complaints.
“The Labour Party is determined to challenge and overturn sexual harassment and misogyny and we aim to lead the political field in the way sexual harassment allegations are dealt with.
"Under our processes investigations are conducted by independent specialists, cases are anonymised, we provide a helpline and we contract an independent specialist advice service to provide support to complainants throughout the process."
