A FORMER police officer has appeared in court charged with historic sexual assaults.

James Edward Potts, who was a police officer in County Durham, appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court yesterday.

The 60-year-old faced one charge of indecent assault of a boy under the age of 16 in Consett between April 1989 and April 1991 and another charge of indecent assault of a man over the age of 16 in Burnopfield on April 28, 1993.

Mr Potts, of Elmfield, Lanchester, near Durham, pleaded not guilty to both charges and was given unconditional bail.

He is due to appear at Durham Crown Court on Thursday, December 5.
