A BUDGET supermarket is opening this week as part of a new retail park on the outskirts of a city.

The Lidl at Dragon Lane Retail Park, in Dragon Lane, Durham, opens on Thursday.

The development also includes homeware store The Range, which is due to open later this month.

David Murphy, Lidl GB’s regional head of property, said: “We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Durham.

"It is great for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community.”

Lidl said it would be employing 40 people in the store, which will have an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing, customer toilets, baby changing and parking for cars and bicycles.

There will be a ribbon cutting at 8am and first-day customers will be able to sample a range of products.

There will be a range of offers over its first three days of trading.
