A GROUP of women, all affected by cancer, bared all in an event to raise money for charity.

The six women, from Darlington, were inspired by the Full Monty and took to the stage at Firthmoor Community Centre on Saturday, October 26.

Together the women, who had either been diagnosed with or witnessed a loved one tackle cancer, raised a total of £1,478.18 as the act of stripping off raised awareness for the importance of checking the body for changes.

“Knowing what’s normal for your body means you’re more likely to recognise something different." said Emma Burrow, a volunteer at the Cancer Research UK shop on Post House Wynd.

"Spotting cancer at an early stage can save lives. We bared all on top and tastefully to highlight this message."

Emma was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma eight years ago at 25 years old.

She endured four rounds of chemotherapy and two stem cell transplants and relapsed three times where, at one stage, she was told that her cancer was terminal.

Now in remission since 2015, Emma dedicates her spare time to raising awareness of the life-changing disease.

She said: “I had palliative chemotherapy, which actually put me in remission. I have suffered lots of side effects from treatment. It’s been a long, slow and difficult recovery, but I am now rebuilding my life. I’ve slowly built up my strength and confidence.

“This performance was our way of helping the charity which means a great deal to us. We really supported one another and have been having a great time learning our routine.

The Northern Echo:

"The event was a huge success. Everyone attending had a brilliant night and we raised £1398.18 which was amazing. The six of us are so proud of what we have achieved and have formed a special bond over the last few months."

As well the charity night the team at Darlington Cancer Research UK are celebrating being finalists in the Love Darlo Town Centre Business Award for ‘Best Customer Service Team’.

Emma added: “Our shop manager Val Trotter has recently announced she is leaving the charity after many years of hard work and dedication, so this was her last event and it will be great for her to leave on a high. To top it off with a win at the business awards would be the icing on the cake.”
