FIREFIGHTERS have spoken out after coming under attack from youths throwing fireworks while they were trying to tackle a house fire.

The crew from Spennymoor, in County Durham, was called to a house on fire in Coundon, near Bishop Auckland on Thursday.

Crew manager Guy Lawes said: "Whilst attending an incident, Spennymoor's appliance came under attack from a group of youths. This attack happened in broad daylight, and involved the youths throwing lit fireworks at the appliance whilst the crew was trying to deal with a house fire.

"Although no-one was hurt on this occasion, these sorts of occurrences have the potential to injure firefighters, damage vital fire-fighting equipment and most importantly make it impossible for crews to carry out their duties."

County Durham Fire and Rescue Service urged anyone with any information about nuisance fires or the sale of fireworks to young people under the age of 18 to report it by calling Firestoppers 0800 169 5558.

Mr Lawes added: "We wish you all a very happy and a safe bonfire night."
