THE emergency services were at the scene of a crash involving a bus and Mini which happened at midday in Middlesbrough.

The incident, which had been reported to police at around 12.05pm on Thursday (October 31), involved a blue Mini and a bus on Wilson Street near to the Sainsbury's Supermarket and Hillstreet Shopping Centre.

Police said the driver of the crashed Mini would need to be cut free from the vehice, but a later statement confirmed that the driver managed to remove himself from the vehicle.

The affected road was cordoned off to allow the emergency services attend the scene, causing heavy traffic to build on Boundary Road in both directions.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 12pm to a Road Traffic Collision involving a bus and car outside Hill Street Shopping Centre on Wilson Street.

"We dispatched three double-crewed ambulances and transported one patient to James Cook University Hospital."

In the afternoon, Cleveland Fire Brigade confirmed they left the scene at 12.41pm and that the driver of the blue Mini 'self-extricated' himself from the crashed car. 

The patient, believed to be a passenger from the bus, was taken to hospital as a precaution for the treatment of minor injuries.
