A POPULAR restaurant has been named as the best pizzeria in England and Wales for the second year running.

Darlington's Stable Hearth, based on Duke Street, opened in 2017 and, within a year, won 'Best Pizzeria' at the 2018 Italian Awards.This year, the businesses celebrated double the success after winning two awards at the 2019 ceremony.

Owners Nicholas Thexton and Gemma Hayward attended the event last Sunday, October 6, in Manchester where they scooped up the titles of 'Best Pizzeria' and 'Best Wine List' .The Neapolitan pizzeria also operate as an Enoteca - an Italian wine shop - with a list of wines for customers to either enjoy in the restaurant or take home.

Mr Thexton said: “It is a huge honour to be recognised again by the Italian Awards. We are pleased that our hard work is paying off. I am immensely proud of the whole Stable Hearth Team- they have worked incredibly hard this year. We constantly strive to share our love of true Neapolitan pizza and other authentic Italian cuisine and wine.

“Since Stable Hearth was names ‘Best Pizzeria’ last year we have expanded the restaurant to meet customer demand. We have also expanded our menu which now includes over 25 pizzas as well as a wide range of starters and side dishes, all inspired by our passion for ‘true’ Italian food.”

Stable Hearth first opened in 2013, operating out of a small venue in Gainford until a move saw the team open on Darlington’s Duke Street in December 2017.
