EMERGENCY services were at the scene of a head-on crash, close to the traffic lights on Central Avenue in Newton Aycliffe just before 2pm yesterday.
It involved two vehicles, a 4x4 Jeep Renegade and a Ford Focus.
The male driver of the Jeep was able to free himself but the woman driver of the Ford had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters.
The road reopened just before 4pm.
One witness said: “There are temporary traffic lights there that are confusing, people think you can go so they’re flying down at 70mph not realising other lights are on green.
“We passed just as it happened and the cars are a mess.”
