A CHARITY bike ride is scheduled to go ahead this weekend after being delayed due to heavy rain.

The Big Butterwick Bike Ride, which has raised more than £100,000 for Butterwick Hospice Care over the past 16 years, will set off from the Elm Tree Social Club, in Stockton, on Sunday, October 13.

The ride was originally intended to take place last weekend, but organisers made the decision to postpone the ride after sections of the route became flooded.

More than 100 riders are expected to take part in the 26-mile cycle ride, which follows a scenic circular route winding through Stockton, Elton, Long Newton, Sadberge, Bishopton, and Redmarshall.

Last year’s event raised more than £7,000 for the North-East charity. Participants aren’t required to raise a minimum amount of money, but all riders who raise more than £100 receive a commemorative t-shirt.

Fundraiser Lyndsey Barnes said: “It’s fantastic to have so many people ready to get on their bikes and ride for the Butterwick. Hopefully this will be the biggest Butterwick Bike Ride ever.

“We’re very grateful to everyone who is taking part and their supporters. We’d especially like to recognise the incredible efforts put in by Brian Hutchinson, who has organised every one of these rides over the last 16 years.”

Cyclists will join their supporters and Butterwick staff at the Elm Tree Social Club after finishing the ride for some well-earned refreshments.

Sign-up is still open for any cyclists wanting to enter the ride. To take part, visit www.butterwick.org.uk/events/BBBR or call 01642 628 930. All ages are welcome to take part, but under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
