A SERVICE is being held to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Durham Miners' Association (DMA).

The special evensong at Durham Cathedral takes place on November 20, the 150th anniversary of the organisation.

The service will be the culmination of the DMA's Lights of the North appeal, which celebrates the people and communities of the Durham coalfield.

The appeal enables people to remember and celebrate in light a loved one, a colliery or a community and runs until the service on November 20.

Each person and place will be represented by a lit candle during the service, with donors to the appeal invited as special guests. Donors also receive a commemorative programme with the names of those to be celebrated.
