HOUSEHOLDERS across the region are preparing for the worst after flood warnings were issued by the government.

In Swaledale and Arkengarthdale where the recovery operation is still ongoing after over 200 homes were flooded in the summer householders are getting ready with sandbags following a flood warning on Arkle Beck by the Government's Flood Warning Service.

They said: “This warning has been issued due to rising levels on Arkle Beck in response to rainfall overnight.

"Areas most at risk are Reeth and Low Fremington. Levels are not expected to reach those seen on Sunday July 29. Flooding of property is possible.

"Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads, which may be flooded. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

One resident said: “Everyone is getting ready with sandbags but it doesn’t look anything like as bad as in the summer, and we haven’t heard of any houses being flooded so far.

"They had to cancel the UCI cycle race going through on Sunday because the weather was so bad. It does seem to be a real washout for us as the moment but we have had so much support it is a huge help."

Other warnings have been put in place at Staithes and at Whitby Harbour.

They say properties bordering Staithes Beck and in the High Street are at risk. The Agency warns: "Our incident response staff are closely monitoring the situation and forecasts. Please be careful along beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads as large waves and sea spray could be dangerous.”
