BUMPER entries– from sheep to walking sticks– along with baking sunshine made for a successful day at Eggleston Show.

Crowds of people enjoyed the annual agricultural show, held in Teesdale on Saturday, and many stayed into the early evening to enjoy live music which was a first for the event.

Show secretary Alan Gent said: "It was a very successful day, we had good crowds throughout the day and everyone seemed to enjoy it. It is such a wonderful setting.

"We had more sheep than ever, new people entering, more walking sticks, some classes were down on numbers in the horse section but there was a decent turnout and we were pleased with how many had managed to get their inoculation sorted in time to come.

"A number of people commented on a revival of the traditional crafts like weaving, crochet and tapestry and how many first time entries we had."

Livestock classes are always a big draw for the crowds, and a chance for farmers to show off their stock and meet up with friends. The overall sheep championship went to Elaine Stones, of Richmond, with a texel and the cattle best in show prize went to a shorthorn owned by Jo Souter, of Eggleston. A Dales pony entered by Keith Metcalf, of Bolam, won the horse title and John Rogers, of Tow Law, took home the overall poultry prize.

In horticulture and produce, Mike Hedley, of Cotherstone, won most points in the vegetable and flower classes; Elizabeth Beach, of Middleton-in-Teesdale, won most points in show for home baking, Newbiggin Women's Institute topped the table of WIs, and D Gardner, of Northallerton, won the coveted dressed stick title.
