A WOMAN was taken to hospital following a crash on the northbound carriageway of the A19 near Sunderland this morning. 

The accident has happened on the northbound carriageway between the exit and entry slip roads at the A183 Chester Road.

Traffic was diverted through the two slip roads and back on to the A19 while emergency services cleared the scene.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 7.59am today, police received a report of a one-vehicle collision on the A19 northbound near Chester Road, Sunderland.

“Emergency services attended and a female driver was taken to hospital.

"The road was closed immediately before the A183 junction and a small diversion put in place to allow a clean-up operation to take place. The road has since reopened."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a two-vehicle RTC on the A19 near Hastings Hill at 7.52am.

"There was an off-duty nurse at the scene supporting the patient. We sent two double-crewed ambulances and two HART vehicles to the scene and took a female patient to the Sunderland Royal Hospital accident and emergency department.

"Another patient was treated and discharged at the scene."
