The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is celebrating its 18 birthday on Tuesday.

As part of its anniversary members of the public will be taken behind the scenes to see its workings with bridge master Tony Hauxwell. One lucky person will be chosen to press the button to tilt the bridge. The bridge will also have a special lighting effect to mark the occasion throughout the evening.

Councillor Douglas, cabinet member for culture, said “Gateshead Millennium Bridge is an award-winning, internationally-recognised icon for Gateshead and the whole of the North-East.

"Over the last 18 years it has not only become a vital commuter route but it, along with the Angel of the North, has become a symbol of our vision for the borough.

“Over the next few years Gateshead Millennium Bridge will help to provide the perfect setting for the £250m Gateshead Quays redevelopment. Being able to celebrate these milestones makes me feel incredibly proud of the ambition and determination we have shown in Gateshead to deliver such forward-thinking projects.”

The bridge was created by Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Gifford & Partners as a result of a design competition launched by the Council in 1996.

In November 2000 Europe’s largest floating crane transported the bridge up the river. It was officially opened by the Queen in May 2002 and has since won numerous awards including the RIBA Stirling Prize and the Civic Trust Building Award.
