A MAN from County Durham has died after falling from a motorbike last week.

His wife, who was riding as a pillion passenger, remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition. 

The couple were involved in a crash on the A61 at Melmerby, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, on Saturday, September 7.

The man, who is in his 50s, died on Friday evening. 

A spokeperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "The man sadly died on the evening of 13 September 2019.

"His wife remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition."

The crash happened at about 1.40pm on September 7. The couple were riding a Kawasaki motorcycle and were travelling towards Ripon when they swerved, leaving the road.

It is understood no other vehicles were involved.

Police are urging anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the motorcycle in the moments before it happened, or has any dash-cam footage that could help the investigation, to get in touch.
