VOLUNTEERS are making older people feel safe in their homes following an initiative to tackle fraudsters.

Age UK County Durham programme 'Beat the Scammers' is delivered in community venues across County Durham in partnership with the consumer protection team and Durham Constabulary.

The charity is delivering free ‘Beat the Scammers’ sessions.

Age UK said nuisance telephone calls from persuasive and charming sales people may result in the purchase of goods or services older people do not want.

They also said fraudsters also use telephone calls and emails to cheat people out of their money or commit identity theft.

The programme sessions run by the charity aim to give people the confidence and skills to handle nuisance telephone calls and also provide advice on ways to protect older people from becoming a victim of fraud.

Age UK County Durham has free information packs and can install free basic call blocker units for those who are receiving a high numbers of nuisance calls and are on welfare benefits or are vulnerable to criminals.
