TWO people were taken to hospital following a crash on the A690 between Durham and Houghton-le-Spring.

The two-vehicle collision happened at about 9.30pm on Saturday, on the A690 northbound at Rainton Gate.

One of the drivers was trapped in her car and was released by firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

Both drivers were taken to the University Hospital of North Durham and were treated for minor injuries. 

It was the second incuident to close the A690 on Saturday.

A pedestrian was hit by a car between Durham and junction 62 of the A1(M) at about 2.45am. 

Jake Paul Miller, 24, from Sunderland, was pronouced dead at the scene.
