A COUNTY Durham man has completed his mission of running 10k every day for a thousand days by finishing on the pitch at the Stadium of Light.

Scott Baker, from Seaham, decided to start the challenge after his mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2016.

Since December 1 of that year, he has run 10,000km – or 6,213 miles – to raise money for Target Ovarian Cancer.

Yesterday, the father-of-two ran from his hometown to Sunderland's Stadium of Light to complete the challenge.

Mr Baker, who works for Durham County Council, said: "I'm looking forward to being finished.

"The support has been really good. I can't fault it."

The 44-year-old added: "I'm still going to keep running."

Mr Baker was cheered off on yesterday's run by friends and family, including his mum, Val, who had come to support him and see him leave from the Tommy statue in Seaham.

He was joined by his children Rosie, 14, and Sam, 12, who ran down the tunnel at the Stadium of Light to complete the 10k.

When he arrived on the pitch he was greeted with a message on the screen at the stadium, congratulating him on his achievement.

He has raised almost £4,000 for the charity, which works to improve early diagnosis, fund life-saving research and provide support to women with the disease.

Since starting the challenge, Mr Baker, who has avoided any major injuries, has lost about two stone. He has had to squeeze in runs at all times of day, sometimes in the middle of the night.

He has been determined to raise money and awareness for Target Ovarian Cancer because of his mother's experience with the cancer.

He added: "My mam was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer in 2016. She is fighting it courageously, never complaining and we are all very grateful for the medical help and support she is receiving to fight this horrible disease.

"My main aim with the challenge is to encourage people to check for signs of ovarian cancer as it's not the silent killer everyone thinks."
