POLICE have re-issued an image of a man wanted in connection with a rape that occurred in Newcastle more than five years ago.

On the evening of June 28, 2014, a 27-year-old girl was out with friends in Newcastle when she met a man she did not know.

The pair returned to an address on Stamfordham Road where it is alleged that the woman was raped in the early hours of June 29.

An investigation into the incident was launched but the man who the woman was with is believed to have left the area soon after the incident.

Inquiries to locate him have been ongoing since the offence was reported but he has never been located and is believed to have previously used a false identity.

His image was circulated through Crimestoppers but now police are re-issuing the picture in the hope that someone may know him.

It is believed the man may be in the South East of England and detectives are keen to trace him so they can speak to him about the allegations.

Detective Inspector Jason Hazell said: “This investigation has been going on for a number of years but it has never been closed.

“We need to identify this man so we can speak to him about the events that night and are once again appealing for help from the public.

“The man in question was living on Stamfordham Road back in 2014 but we believe he was using a false name and so we need to speak to anyone who knew him.

“If you recognise this man, or if you knew him when he lived in the area, then please pick up the phone and call police.”

Anyone who recognises the man, or has information that may assist police, should contact officers on 101 quoting ref 35479C/14.

You can also call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or report it online at the Northumbria Police website.
