FIVE charities are celebrating a slice of £5,000 after thousands of classic car show visitors raised significant amounts of cash.

Representatives from North-East and North Yorkshire-based Herriot Hospice Homecare and the Teesside Hospice, joined staff from national charities, MIND, Age UK and Cancer Research UK, to receive a cheque for £1,000 each by the chairman of 'Classics on Show'.

The classic car event, which attracted more than 1,200 visitors, was held at the Showfield in Stokesley in North Yorkshire, on Saturday, June 15.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Stokesley, more than 350 classic car vehicles from across the country had been organised to attend and were displayed.

Among the collection, worth more than £1m in total, a Steam Roller dating back to the 1920s, a rare Corvette and one of six rare Aston Martin Coupe's.

At the show, motoring television stars from UKTV's 'Bangers & Cash' TV programme also attended, with some of the show's best classic cars being judged by TV frontman Derek Mathewson.

Speaking at the time of 'Classics on Show', Mr Mathewson said: “I love the Stokesley show. It’s one of the best on the annual circuit and attracts real classics and enthusiasts.

“We look forward to meeting Bangers & Cash fans there.”

Chris Mayes of the Rotary Club of Stokesley, who said the show's success was weather-dependent, said: “The show was a great success with around 400 classic vehicles turning out to exhibit despite days of rain prior to the event.

“Thankfully the weather held off on the show day itself and we saw around 1,200 enthusiasts turn out for this annual event.”

The organiser said the five charities chosen to benefit from money raised from ticket entrant fees, and show fees, had been decided on the fact that the charities had stores in Stokesley town centre.

Mr Mayes said a decision had not been made on which charitable causes, 'Classics on Show' would support at next year's event. He said the rotary club would announce the decision in September, and "looked forward" to supporting further causes.
