A FAMILY had a lucky escape after a tumble drier caught fire in their bathroom.
Crews from Stanhope and Crook attended the fire in Wolsingham just before midnight last night.
The smoke alarm woke the family and they escaped unharmed.
Appliances from Stanhope and Crook Fire Stations were sent to the scene and on arrival firefighters found that all those in the property were accounted for, except for a pet cat which they were able to rescue.
Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the fire and specialist ventilation equipment to clear the smoke.
The last appliance left the scene just after 1am this morning.
A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said: “These photos show the importance of closing your doors when you're asleep.
“Never leave your appliances on while out of the house or overnight. Always close internal doors at night.
“Always test your smoke alarm to ensure it's working.
“Smoke alarms save lives.”
