THE world famous Flying Scotsman has returned to the North-East to help Locomotion: The National Railway Museum celebrate its 15th birthday.

Steam enthusiasts in the region are in for a treat as the museum hosts the special visit from A3 class locomotive no. 60103 Flying Scotsman until Friday, August 9.

Flying Scotsman became the first locomotive in the world to achieve an authenticated speed of 100mph back in 1934.

Members of the public can travel behind the Flying Scotsman with steam rides running between Friday, August 2 and Monday, August 5.

On other dates, the locomotive will be on static display, giving people the chance to get up close to the locomotive for free and to see the cab, controls and the corridor tender.

The record-breaking locomotive is halfway through a national tour taking in main line trips across the UK.

Locomotion is open from 10am to 5pm daily and parking and admission are free.
