A DALES town was taken back to a bygone age as thousands enjoyed Leyburn’s popular 1940’s Weekend.
German officers rubbed shoulders with Land Girls and GIs to the backdrop of the music of Glen Miller and wartime crooners.
As well as enjoying the array of 1940s attire, there was an assortment of attractions on offer, including dance lessons, wartime displays and many stalls selling period gifts and memorabilia.
Displays of military vehicles and entertainment included singers at the town’s pubs, while Leyburn Amateur Dramatics staged four performances of their latest farce, ‘Mimi saves the day’ to enthusiastic audiences.
Unlike at some events, a smattering of Axis troops mixed freely among the crowds, resplendent in their German uniforms, they were most popular with visitors keen to take a snapshot of a time gone by.
