THOUSANDS of bike lovers had the chance to spend the day watching displays and gravity-defying stunts at an annual family fun day.

More than 10,000 people are estimated to have turned out for the 25th annual BikeWise, organised by Durham Police to improve road safety, while entertaining visitors.

The Northern Echo:

Taking place at police headquarters at Aykley Heads, Durham, the line-up included some BikeWise favourites like Dave Coates, and trials rider Andy Huddleston, the Jamie Squibb freestyle display team, Durham and Cleveland police dogs, Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness and Triumph collector, Dick Shepherd. Music was provided by the band Red 5.

Also on display was the 3Sixty Bicycle Stunt Team, the Great North Air Ambulance and police helicopter.

Chief Constable Jo Farrell said: “It has been brilliant to welcome so many visitors through our doors today to celebrate 25 years of Bikewise.

“The event has been a tremendous success over the years and has helped our efforts to improve road safety.

“It is also a chance to showcase the many aspects of our work to members of the public, and hopefully inspire a new generation to consider a career in policing.”

The event is one of the North-East's biggest motorcycle focussed family fun days.
