A SCHOOL which provides children with social, emotional and mental health needs has picked up an award for supporting youngsters’ wellbeing.

Walworth Primary School, in Newton Aycliffe, is the first special school to achieve The Wellbeing Award for Schools which recognises positive mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Headteacher Peter Wallbanks said: “I am very privileged and grateful to receive this award on behalf of Walworth School. The feedback and comments shared by the award verifier are very welcoming and this acknowledged the 18 months of intense work we have undertaken to ensure that this school leads effective practice and that provisions are in place which promote emotional wellbeing and mental health for the whole school community.”

The award verifier added: “I am extremely impressed by the quality of evidence which, on reflection, should be no surprise as it merely reflects the quality of the school.”
