PRODUCERS of Durham's Lumiere are calling on piano players of all ages to perform as part of a spectacular new installation at the festival.

Keys of Light is an interactive light installation by Dutch artist Mr Beam. Triggered by sound, the artwork is co-created by audience members who will take part in a series of live solo performances.

Lumiere, commissioned by Durham County Council and produced by Artichoke, returns to the city from November 17, for the tenth anniversary edition.

During the festival, each performer will get to play a selection of their chosen pieces on the grand piano and see their music visualised through dazzling projections. Each note played will trigger an animation onto the facade of Rushford Court on North Road, transforming the building and creating a living, moving artwork which responds to the tone, speed, volume and length of each song played.

Producer Louise Dennison said: “We’re thrilled to launch this open call for Keys of Light participants. Since 2009, local

people have been integral to the success of Lumiere.

"This year, we want to put the community on centre stage, inviting piano-players throughout the county to take part in what

will undoubtably be one of the highlights of the 2019 programme."Bill Fullen, chief executive, Believe housing said:

“We’re delighted to be supporting Keys of Light, which has given us the opportunity to work with the Artichoke team to give people

living across County Durham the opportunity to develop their musical talents and play a vital

part in Lumiere.

County council leader Councillor Simon Henig added: “Engaging with the community and ensuring that the residents of County Durham are able to play a part in Lumiere has always been an important part of the festival.

"We already offer budding artists the chance to have their work realised through the Brilliant initiative, but it’s great to be able to offer our residents another chance to contribute to the creative process through Keys of Light."

Be it Mozart or Michael Bublé, all piano pieces are welcome. To apply to be part of Keys of Light email participation@artichoke.uk.com with contact information and what pieces you would like to play during a 10-minute time slot.
